Licensing modern music from PROs costs anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars per year. It becomes more expensive when you want to license music from multiple PROs. The particular cost is different for every gym and depends on a few factors. First, it must be determined whether or not the music you are playing is “background music” or if it is being played in an “active” setting, such as a group fitness class. Each requires a different license. Background music is cheaper, and will usually cost a few hundred dollars per year for smaller gyms and over a thousand for larger gyms. Background music fees are calculated based on the size and capacity of the gym as well as the number of speakers set up. If you are playing the music in an “active” setting (all individual or group fitness classes are considered “active” settings), fees will be much higher, and will also factor in the number of attendees and number of classes being held.
What is the penalty for playing music at my gym without a license?
While licenses cost a lot of money, failure to obtain a license can be even more expensive. Fines for failure to obtain a music license can be thousands of dollars or more, with the maximum statutory fine being $150,000 per song, not to mention the costs of an expensive lawsuit.

Can I play my own music?
